How Boosting Eye Pigment Contributes to Better Vision?

A recent study by the University of Georgia concluded that yellow pigment in the eye directly contributes to better vision in hazy conditions. Researchers at the university experimented in a simulated haze to test how far or the distance people can see in such a condition with different amount of yellow pigment in the eye.

Yellow Pigment & Its Importance

Also referred to as macular pigment, it’s a combination of lutein and zeaxanthin that are food-based nutrients found in various edibles and supplements. This yellow pigment protects photoreceptors in the eye and sharpens the vision from different aspects.

During the experiment, volunteers with different amount of yellow pigment in the eye were observed after being exposed to the haze which helped in computing the amount of the pigment equal to the distance of sight.

The results concluded that individuals with increased amount of yellow pigment allowed them to see objects more clearly even when kept at a certain distant. That said; highest yellow pigment count let these individuals to see twice better and farther.

Other than that, the yellow pigment also enhances vision in many different ways even among the individuals who’ve been recommended YAG laser surgery due to vision anomalies.

Boosting the Yellow Pigment

Count of yellow pigment in the eye is directly linked with the diet which adequately supplies lutein and zeaxanthin required by our body. For proper supply of both the nutrients, your body need consumption of more dark green and leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, bell peppers and bright coloured fruits such as oranges so on.

Consuming more of such foods contributes to better vision and overall health which means increase in consumption of all such foods also lowers the risk of age-related macular degeneration development. Healthy supply of lutein and zeaxanthin is crucial for good health and restoration of white blood cells in the body which helps in fighting diseases and keeps the immune system strong.

In addition to all these benefits, consuming more of these nutrients makes the yellow pigment thicker and protects rods and cones in the eyes. The thicker the layer, greater the reduction to photophobia (sensitivity to light), decrease in glares, sharpness of the sight and better contrast sensitivity!

Another more concerning issue emerged about lack of food consumption which contributes to vision development. As we’re more exposed to digital devices, there’s a greater need to protect the eyes from harmful blue light emitted by all such devices which means we need to increase food intake rich in lutein and zeaxanthin along with essential vitamins.
